ENIGMA -Toderov Narrative Theory

Narrative:
Is the media term for story telling. Narrative is the way the different elements in a story are organised to make a meaningful story. Some of these elements can be facts as in a documentary, or characters and action as in a drama.

In the E X A M
Consider the way the front cover creates a narrative about character and lifestyle in order to attract an audience.
> What are they trying to sell?
> What do we learn about the feature star from the cover? How might this relate to our own lives?
> What enigma codes (clues and hints) are used? Why will they appear? What are the magazines offering that we may not get elsewhere?

-This edition highlights women empowerment.
-They're trying to sell a "sisterly" relationship with their target audience.
-Embodying a rebellious theme to the readers - controversial to their usual stories.
-Encouraging feminism - a lot of their target market are young, therefore, very influential.

-The model is dressed in masculine clothes - dark green colour pallet in a sort of army jacket.
-However, uses a hint of feminine colours such as purples and pinks. As well as using sparkly jewelry earrings to emphasis the magazine's feminine concept.
-She's positioned very powerful yet poised. Very contrasting to the stereotypical message of women  being perceived as glamorous and sexy.
-Juxtaposition of the stereotype of men and women in the media.

-Embodying a lifestyle approach - stories/ film/ music/ fashion/ mischief/ ideas

ENIGMA
The enigma created offers a sense of mystery towards the readers. There are many interpretations of this magazine cover, some which may differentiate with the idea of contrasting the idea of the stereotypical impression of male and females presented within society.
Moreover, it embeds curiosity whether the model represents importance, or whether she is a celebrity? It makes their target audience decipher her purpose on the front cover.

-The position usually resembles her being relaxed however her face says otherwise.
-The text at the bottom: "Power and poise - Words of hard-won wisdom - surprisingly strong things"
-Makes the reader question who believes this. What's its purpose. - very cryptic.
-Her clothing is very covered - links to social exceptions within society, if related to the war (due to    her jacket), this shows respect towards men and society as a whole - historical - links to religion.

Binary opposites: men and women presented as opposites. > in this particular magazine cover, she represents both men and women social expectations.
