HOMEWORK

Exam Q. How does the magazine challenge traditional representation (16 marks). The magazine 'Oh Comely' differentiates to other traditional representations of a common magazine. A way in which they do this is through the use of neutral and minimalist colour tones, which is seen on the fonts, setting and the model's makeup. In relation to the model's clothing and pose, this embeds a dramatic effect in comparison to the clean and achromatic theme of the cover. This aesthetic entices the readers, therefore increases their consumers. What we can interpret from this particular cover of an 'Oh Comely' magazine, is the continuous pale tones of the setting, costume, text and makeup. The setting has been intentionally blurred in order to accentuate the model. The model is a significant element included on the cover because she enables the readers to visualise the message they are trying to address to the reader; she represents the magazine's intentions and purpose...

THEORIES

Theories: Semiology - Barthes Can be applied to any sign, including language and image, to examine connotations and ideology. Draws attention to the naturalising effect of ideology in any text - this applies particularly to the newspapers and magazines, as headlines typically assume a shared view of the world with the readers in order to be easily understand. Genre - Neale Can be applied to any media product that has genres and links together media language, audiences and industries. The concept of genre as a shared code explains how genres can change (e.g. the 'quality' press becoming more like tabloids) and hybridise (e.g. the middle-market tabloids, such as the Mail, that follow both, 'tabloid' and 'broadsheet' conventions).  Representation - Hall Can be applied to any media product. Applies particularly to the role of power in representations - both the general distribution of power in society and the power of the print media as an insti...

AIMS/ PRIORITIES OF THE INSTITUTION Q: How do the aims of 'Oh  Comely' differ to more mainstream women's magazines like 'Closer, 'Glamour', or 'Heat'? Oh Comely differs to other magazine's like 'Glamour' because they highlight more stereotypical influences like celebrity gossip, popular/ "in-trend" topics or products, fashion, etc. They embody again the typical feminine colours of pinks and purple. Also focus on their models wearing makeup and colourful clothing. 'Glamour' portray stories linked to beauty and lifestyle. This is similar to 'Oh Comely' because they encourage healthy living, introducing new lifestyle habits and hobbies, music, books, etc. This differentiates with 'Oh Comely' because they have a very minimalist approach. Most magazines encourage changes, wheres 'Oh Comely' promote acceptance. Q: How do the aims of 'Oh Comely...

MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS - Oh Comley

Image
Analyse of Cover - Very subtle tones colours  - The background is ombre / different brown and grey     tones - Unusual pose. Represents her confusion which           highlights the question furthermore. Disappointment,    uncertainty, etc. Unconventional. - Identity crisis. Self-reflection. - The shape of the model's hairline is in the shape of a     heart, indicating a warm approach to the readers. - Again, minimal makeup - Peculiar pose for a magazine cover, creates an              enigma to question the purpose of it - links to the           question typed "who are the new generation of              teens?" - Her facial expression shows confusion, as though        she is asking that question. - Low-key aiming to force a new stereotype to their         ...
